Balkan design network announced the competition Young Balkan Designers 2015 – Common Grounds. The competition is open until February 28, 2015 and is intended for young designers up to 35 years from the following countries: Albania, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Slovenia, Serbia and Turkey.
This year’s edition of the Young Balkan Designers project under the slogan Common Grounds calls for introspective view of their own heritage and cultural values, roots, authenticity and imperfection, and their intelligent application in the context of contemporary Balkans. Authors are invited to thought heritage in the broadest terms, ranging from personal background and culture, collective heritage, and to activate the value of cultural goods and to incorporate the material and intangible heritage in their work.
The subject of the competition can be design concepts, products (furniture, lighting, interior elements, everyday objects, home accessories, stationary, aid products), urban services, recycled materials, fashion garments, etc. that offer innovative yet rational solutions to everyday problems. Criteria appreciated by the jury: threads of material and immaterial heritage woven into innovative features of the project that enhance the quality of contemporary community life; ergonomics; rational production costs; use of materials available locally; environmentally friendly production process; significant social impact.
The works selected to be part of a two-year program Young Balkan Designers which includes regional designer competition, international traveling exhibition and program for mobility and education for young designers. Also, the creators of the three best projects will visit residential mentoring workshops that will be organized in cooperation with leading regional designers and manufacturers.
Applicants may be individuals or groups of creators. Each applicant may submit more than one entry. The competition is open from 28th December 2014 – 28th February 2015. Applicants will be able to register and submit their projects by filling in a Young Balkan Designers form online until 1st February 2015 at 23.59.
Young Balkan Designers is a regional talent platform founded in 2009 with the aim to identify, promote and develop creative potential of the Balkan region, in the field of product design. The initiative also aims at unifying regional design scene, bringing it closer to the international market, strengthening its creative potential by offering additional education and practice, while at the same time contributes to the restoration of multi-cultural cooperation in the Balkan region.
