Adj egy üres lakást hallgatóknak, majd engedd őket szabadon nehány hétre. Egyre több egyetemen találhatók hasonló designprojektek, azonban a svájci ECAL úgy tűnik, idén mindenkit beelőzött és többszörösen lekörözött. Az alapanyag ezúttal az Apartment No. 50 volt, a Cité radieuse egyik lakása.
Jean-Marc Drut és Patrick Blauwart, mióta megvették és felújították a lakást, különböző designereket és tervezőirodákat kérnek fel a beltér teljes átalakítására, melyet nyáron a nagyközönség is szabadon bejárhat. A 2008 óta futó projektbe azonban először idén vontak be egyetemistákat is, miután Pierre Charpin tavaly az ECAL hallgatóit nevezte meg utódként.
Tavaly szeptemberben a svájci egyetem formatervezői egy háromnapos workshop keretén belül megfigyelhették a különböző helyiségek, belső terek valamint a közösségi tetőterasz működését és sajátosságait. Mindez kellő rálátást és inspirációt biztosított nekik a tervezéshez, különös tekintettel a napi rutin megkönnyítése és a lakás teljesítményének javítása terén.
Le Corbusier épületeit és filozófiáját már kortársai körében is általános volt mind bírálni, mind felemelni. Mindez, úgy tűnik, azóta hatványozottan igaz: Corb megkerülhetetlen figurája a huszadik századi építészetnek és designelméletnek. Ugyanakkor az ECAL projektjéhez hasonló kezdeményezések bizonyítják, hogy nem lehet a történelem részeként leírni, hiszen megannyi tervezőre volt, és még van ma is hatással. Az ECAL hallgatóinak lehetőségük nyílt minderre reflektálni, miközben úgy érezzük, kimaxolták az akadémiai retró kérdéskörét.

The recipe is simple: give an empty apartment to design students and leave them with the task for a couple of weeks. More and more design courses apply a similar approach in their curriculum, however, odds are the ace is in the hands of the swiss ECAL this year. The project to refurbish the Apartment No. 50 in Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse is one hard to beat.
Since Jean-Marc and Patrick Blauwart has bought and refurbished the apartment, they have invited designers and practices every year to overhaul the interior, which would be open to the public during summer. This year, students have been involved for the first time since the start in 2008, after Pierre Charpin nominated the students of ECAL as the designers of the following year.
The three-day workshop in September in Marseille provided a great opportunity to discover the building, as the students could observe the daily routine. After leaving the Cité Radieuse, this background proved to be valuable when designing the furniture and the accessories. It was an important aspect to try to improve the quality of life and the performance of the building throughout the scheme.
The concepts and buildings of Le Corbusier have enjoyed a wide range of criticism and praise since the very first moment. It appears as if this debate has only intensified: Corb is now a key figure of 20th century architecture and design theory arguably. Moreover, such initiatives as the refurbishment of the Apartment No. 50 prove that his works and ideas are still challenging the new generation of designers. The students of the ECAL have had the opportunity to reflect upon these, while we have the impression they have overkilled the field of academic retro design.
