This organic, monolithic white church draws inspiration from natural forms and the curves of Baroque architecture. The new parish church of Santa Maria Goretti, designed by Mario Cucinella Architects, is located in the hilltown of Mormanno overlooking the Pollino National Park, in southern Italy.
Construction of the church began in 2015 and this year it was dedicated to the youngest saint in the Catholic Church, St Mary of Goretti. Its distinctive yet timeless design is inspired by the prestigious Byzantine churches of the Italian region of Calabria. The building is composed of four white concrete columns, which together form a distinct, flowing form, and is further characterized by a thin entrance opening in an illuminated cross and words carved into the outer wall of the church, referring to the life of St Mary Goretti. The minimalist exterior is followed by an astonishing interior, with a sixteen-meter-high ceiling filled with hanging, translucent fabric. This ethereal design element is intended to accentuate the building’s flowing form and fill the worship space with soft light.
The Santa Maria Goretti Church is also designed to require minimal maintenance and energy consumption. The green roofs and internal courtyards, as well as the organic garden in front of the parish hall, contribute to its sustainability and serve the local community.
