A grandiose Olympic cauldron from Nendo

The highlight of the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics was literally the cauldron bursting into flames and blossoming like a fire flower. The huge structure was designed by Nendo, one of Tokyo’s best-known design studios.

The giant white structure symbolises the sun and the energy and vitality that can be derived from it, according to Nando. Ten panels were detached from the water-and fireproof structure, reminding of a volleyball, and then the inside was lit by the last torchbearer, Naomi Osaka.
