Beyonce opened the 2022 Oscars with the song “Be Alive” from the biographical drama King Richard, which tells the story of Venus and Serena Williams’ father and coach. The visually captivating neon-yellow performance was directed by Samuel Jeymes and shot by Hungarian-born Marcell Rév. We asked the cinematographer about his experience.
“We used six cameras and a drone to film the song on a tennis court near where Serena and Venus grew up in the Compton area of Los Angeles. It took about three weeks of preparation, location scouting and rehearsals, whilst I was bouncing between NY and LA. We also had a dress rehearsal on spot the day before, but I was still very nervous, I am not used to instructing so many cameras at once. It has its charms, of course, and working with Beyoncé and her team is a powerful experience,” Marcell told us.
