The Bulgarian-born artist, who died last year, funded his dream himself by selling his early sketches and works.
Almost sixty years have passed since Christo, working with Jeanne-Claude, looked out of the window of his rented room near the Arc de Triomphe and decided he wanted to wrap up the building. His dream, which he will not be able to witness from this world, will be fully realized by 18 September, when the 25,000 square meters of recyclable propylene packaging will be completed and on display until 3 October.
During this time, Sotheby’s Paris is also organizing an exhibition entitled The Final Christo, with twenty-five works on display. All of them are related to the wrapped Arc de Triomphe. They will be put up for auction at the end of the exhibition, with the proceeds supporting the Christo & Jeanne-Claude Foundation, alongside further art projects.
