Clothes for (not only) extra tall people—interview with the founders of thisSIDE

Patrik Ligetvári is a handball player, a national team player of Veszprém Telekom and is two meters tall. He needs clothes that are sporty, comfortable and fit his height, but the latter is something that not only global clothing chains that rely on ready-to-wear sizes, but even local designer brands, cannot usually deliver. thisSIDE was created as a solution to this problem and is an important venture for inclusive design, offering quality and sporty pieces. The brand is a joint project of Patrik Ligetvári and Henrietta Morár, a couple, who dreamed up and launched the brand together with the aim of making sure that everyone can find comfortable clothing for themselves. We asked them about the launch of thisSIDE!

What makes thisSIDE so special is that it offers solutions that go beyond the typical confection sizes—comfortable clothes for tall people. What personal experiences inspired the creation of the brand?

Henrietta Morár: Patrik, because of his height, had problems finding clothes of the right size and length in most cases, as everything was usually too short for him. So we had been considering the idea of having our own brand for a long time, it was a big dream for Patrik. For some reason, we never found the right moment, and then we looked at each other and felt that it was decided, we were going to do it.

Patrik Ligetvári: The idea for the brand was indeed inspired by the fact that because of my height, I always had a hard time finding clothes that were the right size, comfortable, yet trendy. At the same time, it is important to emphasize that thisSIDE products are not only for people of extreme height but for everyone who wants to give themselves a quality, sporty look.

Why did you choose the name thisSIDE for the brand?

H.M.: We have been thinking and brainstorming together for weeks about the best name. At first, we started with the idea that the brand name should refer to Patrick. There were so many options until Patrik blurted out of the blue: thisSIDE.

P.L: This name reflects my philosophy of life. I always try to find the golden mean, whether it’s work or personal life. I strive for balance, that’s my ”side”, which now includes thisSIDE.

The graphic materials are made by you, Heni, and textile designer Piroska Papp helps you with the designs of the pieces you dream up. How do you divide the rest of the brand-related work between you?

H.M.: We decide and discuss everything together. When we founded the brand, we also agreed not to make decisions without the other. Since handball will always come first for Patrik, I’m the one who does most of the work. When designing a collection, we always decide together which pieces to make and we also choose the colors together.

P.L: Handball has a permanent place in my life, so it’s a great help to be able to count on Heni for everything. It’s a joint decision, but she does the lion’s share of the work, and I’m very grateful to her for that.

In addition to the specific sizing, what else is typical of the garments? What kind of style do you represent, what kind of feeling of life do you want to convey with the clothes?

H.M.: We build all our collections around a specific theme. The most important aspect when designing is comfort and making Patrik really embrace the collection. Not only do we market these pieces, but he actually wears them, his wardrobe includes all thisSIDE pieces. The collection includes both oversize and longline pieces, but anyone—tall or not—who wants comfortable, sporty pieces can find something to wear. We also plan to include sporty-chic pieces in our next collection.

P.L: These are all pieces of clothing that are a pleasure to wear. They are comfortable, they can withstand an active lifestyle and they are simple, unique yet trendy sportswear. We will continue to design garments like this in the future.
