The concrete villa designed by architecture studio Formafatal recalls Brazil’s Brutalist architecture. Czech design in the Costa Rican jungle, second episode.

Architecture studio Formafatal really found themselves in the Costa Rican jungle. After designing Atelier Villa, which we also covered recently, they completed another building of the Art Villas Resort complex, Art Villa 2, where they were in charge of the interior design.

The building itself was designed by the (once again) Czech studio Refuel Works. The concrete villa hidden in the lush greenery primarily went viral on the world wide web due to its spectacular concrete pool. The architects drew inspiration for the building from the works of Paulo Mendes da Rocha, a dominant figure of Brazilian Brutalism.

The five bedrooms of the two-story villa on 570 sqm are placed on the top floor, together with the kitchen, the living room and the terrace leading to the pool. The ground floor gives home to a gym, a playroom and storage rooms.

The contrast between raw and luxurious experienced in Atelier Villa recurs here, too, perhaps even in a slightly stronger version. The concrete walls are brought to life by the luxuriant indoor garden and exciting design furniture in vibrant pastel colors.

The designers of Formafatal played with both symmetry and reflecting surfaces a lot in the space. An exciting example of this is the indoor lake in the hall, making entering the villa an almost transcendent experience.
