Design cavalcade among the ferns | Mateusz Baumiller

A design crash course combined with relaxation—the Masurian Lake District in Poland is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the region, thanks to its unique natural features. Hundreds of lakes, idyllic greenery, and the close proximity to wilderness make it the perfect place to relax, but this time we’re going beyond the natural treasures to present a design gem that will surely win the heart of art-loving hikers. Even yours!

The Fern dom mazurski, or Masurian Fern House, takes its name from the surrounding fern grove. You might not think it at first glance, but this small wooden house surrounded by greenery is a true design oasis: when you step in through the door, you’re greeted by a visual feast of applied arts masterpieces and works of young Polish designers. The building was designed by Warsaw architect Mateusz Baumiller, who has thoroughly, yet playfully balanced nature and extravagance, thus the interiors are a reflection of the most influential Polish works. We can admire several of Mateusz Baumiller’s designs, who is no stranger to mixing dimensions: most recently, we examined how he combined the atmosphere of a socialist-realist elementary school and a Parisian loft apartment in a co-working office.

The large common areas and bedrooms of the guest house are suitable for larger groups, as well. The Fern House has a capacity of 12 people, 220 square meters with six bedrooms, three bathrooms, a spacious living room, a large kitchen, and a dining room, all with a spectacular view. The aim was to create a place where you could enjoy both the beauty of the surroundings and the interior. A cavalcade of colors, textures, and shapes enhances this experience, a result of carefully selected details: thanks to the work of interior designers, the design scene’s emblematic objects populate the house. The fireplace is the focal point of the living room and, unconventionally, it is decorated with the Dutch DTILE  brand’s minimalist tiles, which also play an important role in the kitchen area. The accessories include a number of Malwina Konopacka’s eye-catching, jovial OKO vases, while another highlight is a floral tapestry by Splot, representing both the air of the Polish countryside and the vibe of the latest trends. Inside the weekend resort’s rooms, Katarzyna Jasyk’s geometric beds provide a comfortable sleep, and after waking up guests may admire themselves in Magda Jurek’s mirrors, to then turn their attention to the Red Dot Award-winning Omnires Studios accessories and WOW Design ceramic tiles, bathing in the diversity of design.

Whether you’re in couple or a large group, Fern dom mazurski is suitable for everyone.
