When thinking of New York, the first things that come to mind about Harlem are perhaps not the unique architectural solutions, but it’s no longer just Manhattan and Brooklyn that have surprises in store for design lovers. The apartments in this building, designed and built by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), are a perfect example of what it is like to fit a lot of furniture into a small space.
The building, called The Smile, features lofts, two-bedroom apartments and homes designed to make the most of all the available space. The latter is possible because it is the first building in the city to use the solution from Bumblebee Spaces. Bumblebee’s modular furniture system is designed to change a room’s function, by utilizing cubic space rather than relying solely on square footage. You don’t need to move furniture to reach this, of course, as you can operate the robotized equipment with an app or voice control.
