The Franciscan monastery on Margaret Island was destroyed in the 16th century by the Turks. Its original form is now evoked by Carol Kharbosh in the architect’s new renovation plans.
In the middle of Margaret Island in Budapest stand the ruins of the former Franciscan monastery and its church: the remains of the Gothic church façade, one of the sidewalls, the monastery cemetery, and the cemetery chapel can only suggest what the building complex might have looked like in its early days. Carol Kharbosh designed a building structure that recalls the monastery’s former appearance, complements the ruins while also protecting them. The use of a steel structure and glass as a finishing material allow the ruins to remain visible from the outside even though the extension surrounds the fragments.
