A modular system that provides privacy in Ukrainian refugee shelters

Pritzker Prize-winning architect Shigeru Ban designed the modular partition system in 2011 as a simple solution to enhance privacy in evacuation centers. It was first used in shelters following the Great East Japan Earthquake (2011), since then they have been deployed as Covid-19 vaccination booths, and now the concept has been repurposed for refugees fleeing from Ukraine.

Since the beginning of the war, the system has been used in shelters in Lviv in western Ukraine, Poland and France, and is planned to be rolled out in Germany and Slovakia soon.
