Plastic-eating bacteria | Poliloop

How can the field of chemical engineering support environmental protection and protect biodiversity from the immeasurable waste produced by humanity? – one out of the many questions Poliloop founders Liz Madaras and Krisztina Lévay must have been looking to answer while studying pharmaceutical engineering at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. And the answer was soon to come.

The Hungarian biotech startup created a bacterial cocktail that is able to break down a PET bottle in only 50 days. The seriousness of the project is also proven by the fact that its supporters and new investors also include Budapest-based Vespucci Partners and US-based Techstars, one of the most acknowledged international accelerators of the world.

The greatness of the invention lies in the fact the final output is a nature-identical organic sludge, a compost material that we can integrate into the circular ecosystem without regrets.

The next big step for the company is industrial testing – if successful, several other companies could join their investors’ team.
