Neri Oxman, architect, designer, pioneer material researher—founder of The Mediated Matter Group in Massachusetts Institute of Technology, besides she also owns a laboratory—, is best known for otherworldly-looking designs and installations built from unexpected biological matter, which is now on display at the Nature x Humanity exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Oxman has not only developed new ways of thinking about materials, objects, buildings and construction methods, but also a new framework for interdisciplinary—even interspecific—collaboration. Her pioneering approach, which she calls “material ecology,” combines materials science, digital production technologies and organic design to create new possibilities for the future. SFMOMA’s exhibition Nature x Humanity explores how these creations are a vital provocation for architecture in an era of climate change.
