Tallinn shows us how to turn a port into an awesome community space

An 850-meter-long elevated promenade rises above the harbor of the Old Town in Tallinn. The new passenger terminal and its complementary public spaces were designed by Salto Architects and Stuudio Tallinn.

One of the Estonian capital’s ports has been renewed: a characteristic feature of the new terminal is that the environment of the building has also been given special attention. The designers’ aim was to create a space that could be used not only during the cruise season but beyond that to provide recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. The roof of the terminal has a staggered design that serves as a seating area and an open space for spectators during events. From here, you descend to the upstairs promenade, which stretches 850 meters out to sea, making the coastal promenade a rain shelter. The upper level features a playground, an outdoor gym, and a paved promenade, lined with a row of plants.
