The fight against food waste with crotchet

A giant crocheted fried egg with a slice of bacon, a falling apart sandwich, a partially eaten ice cream and a glass of instant noodles. Swiss artist Sabina Speich draws attention to issues of food waste, junk food and the consumption patterns of a growing global population with her Crochet Giantfood project.

The colorful pieces are mostly made from used wool and yarn, which the artist receives from followers on social media who would otherwise have thrown them away. The works are currently on show at Helvetia Art Foyer in Basel, in a group exhibition titled “Seeing full” which explores how different Swiss artists address the theme of food consumption.
