The work of Wael al-Avar and Kenichi Teramoto investigates the use of salt as an alternative to Portland cement.

The pavilion, called Wetland, highlights the thousands of ways waste is used, prompting us to rethink the relationship between waste and production and open up new horizons through craft and technology, according to the judges. The Russian and Philippine pavilions also received special recognition from the jury.

The German studio Raumlaborberlin also earned a Golden Lion for its installation Instances of Urban Practice. A Silver Lion for Emerging Talent went to the Foundation for Achieving Seamless Territory in Amsterdam. The jury members were Sijima Kazujo, Sandra Barclay, Lamia Joreige, Lesley Lokko, and Luca Molinari.
