Ez a dinamika magában a beszédben is tükröződik. Az Ulcinjban beszélt albán nyelv sajátos ritmussal és hangsúllyal bír, amelyet a hosszútávú együttélés formált. Don’t you remember what history says about them?” or a vice-versa question. This question is often asked of people who live in ethnically mixed places. In Ulcinj, a town on Montenegro’s southernmost coast near the Albanian border, it feels far removed from everyday reality.

Written by Fitor Astafa

Ulcinj’s population is largely Albanian, alongside Montenegrin, Serbian, and smaller Bosnian, Muslim, and Croatian communities. Yet daily life here is not organised around percentages or categories. People walk the same streets, sit in the same cafés, and share the same parks without constant reference to differences. In the city centre, it is common to hear Albanian, Montenegrin, and Serbian spoken side by side. Diversity is visible and audible, but it does not disrupt the city's rhythm. Coexistence here functions less as an idea and more as a routine – a form of lived multiculturalism shaped by proximity rather than policy.

Public Life Before Identity
In Ulcinj, being from the city often comes before being defined by ethnicity. The town’s shared history, coastal geography, and everyday routines create a strong local identity – Ulqinakor Ulcinjani. Ethnic background remains meaningful, as it does throughout Europe, but it is rarely the first thing people emphasise when introducing themselves. Public life reflects this priority. Cafés are mixed and informal, with people from different backgrounds often sharing the same tables. Streets feel linguistically layered: Albanian dominates daily conversation, while Montenegrin and Serbian circulate naturally alongside it. In workplaces – particularly public institutions – multilingualism is often expected, and professional environments are shared across communities. Familiarity grows through repetition: seeing the same faces, sharing space, and navigating the city together. This everyday cohabitation produces a sense of belonging rooted less in identity labels and more in shared presence.

Traditions Side by Side (Not Mixed, Not Opposed)
The blending of everyday life in Ulcinj does not erase cultural distinctions. Traditions remain clearly defined and carefully preserved. Religious and cultural calendars coexist rather than merge, with Christmas, Ramadan, Bayram, and other celebrations observed openly and without friction. The city’s cultural landscape is plural, not hybrid – difference is maintained rather than diluted. Albanian weddings, for example, remain unmistakably Albanian. Music, symbols, and rituals follow Albanian and, in many cases, Muslim traditions. Albanian songs are played, flags are raised, and religious ceremonies take place freely in mosques or family settings. These expressions are visible and widely accepted as a normal part of public life. The same openness applies to Montenegrin and Serbian celebrations. Their weddings, music, and symbols are expressed without interference. What defines these moments is not separation, but mutual recognition. It is common for Albanians to attend Montenegrin or Serbian weddings, and vice versa, particularly among neighbours and close acquaintances. Participation is less about sharing tradition than about acknowledging joy – a form of respect practised quietly rather than declared.

Everyday Difference
Ulcinj is home to Muslims, Catholics, and Orthodox Christians. Most Albanians are Muslim, though Catholic Albanians are also present, while Montenegrins and Serbs are predominantly Orthodox Christian. These differences are visible in daily habits, but they rarely become sources of tension. Food offers a practical example. Many Muslims do not eat pork, which has influenced everyday consumption patterns in the city. Halal food is widely available, and most restaurants offer menus suitable for everyone. Pork exists, but it is not dominant. Rather than being negotiated constantly, these differences are absorbed into daily routines.

Humour plays a subtle role in managing diversity. Light stereotypes circulate among friends – Montenegrins as “slow,” Albanians as “stubborn,” Serbs as “dramatic,” Bosnians as “naive.” These jokes function only within a context of familiarity and mutual trust. Boundaries are generally understood. Religion, violence, or historical trauma are avoided as punchlines. Difference becomes part of a shared social language, navigated with caution rather than confrontation.

Language as Social Infrastructure
Language provides perhaps the clearest insight into how coexistence operates in Ulcinj. Albanian is the dominant language of everyday life, while Montenegrin and Serbian remain present through institutions, education, and public administration. As a result, many Albanian speakers have at least functional knowledge of Montenegrin or Serbian, with some speaking it fluently. Living within the Montenegrin state naturally encourages multilingualism. Knowledge of the official language is often necessary for public-sector employment and administrative life. For many Albanians, this is not experienced as loss or pressure, but as a practical extension of daily reality.

This dynamic is also reflected in speech itself. The Albanian spoken in Ulcinj has a distinct rhythm and accent shaped by long coexistence. Certain Montenegrin or Serbian words occasionally appear in Albanian conversations – not as political gestures, but as practical shortcuts. These borrowings are situational and unmarked, reflecting ease rather than identity shift. Language here functions less as a boundary and more as infrastructure: a tool that supports everyday interaction.

Politics, Media, and Distance
National politics and media narratives are present in Ulcinj, but they rarely define everyday interaction. Most national news is broadcast in Montenegrin or Serbian, while Albanian-language media exists through local outlets and dedicated segments. Residents are exposed to multiple perspectives simultaneously.

Media narratives often diverge, particularly on sensitive regional issues. These differences are widely recognised. What distinguishes Ulcinj is the gap between media discourse and social behaviour. Political debates tend to remain abstract, rarely entering shared social spaces. People are aware of potential discomfort and adjust accordingly, keeping sensitive discussions within familiar circles. Despite divergent opinions, daily routines remain uninterrupted. Coffee is shared, work continues, and public space remains collective. Political differences exist, but they do not reorganise social life. In Ulcinj, disagreement does not automatically translate into distance.

Unspoken Rules of Coexistence
Coexistence in Ulcinj is sustained through informal social norms rather than formal agreements. People generally know which topics invite conversation and which invite silence, depending on context. In mixed company, restraint is valued over provocation.

Beliefs do not disappear; they adapt to space. People express stronger opinions privately, while public interaction prioritises comfort and continuity. Humour is filtered, sensitivity is assumed, and restraint is seen as social competence rather than weakness. This form of everyday governance – managing difference without formal negotiation – has developed organically through long-term cohabitation. It reflects a shared understanding that social life functions best when difference is acknowledged without being constantly tested.

Younger Generations and Layered Identity
For younger generations, coexistence is not something to be learned later – it is the environment they grow up in. Mixed spaces, multilingual interaction, and social familiarity are the norm rather than the exception. This reflects a broader Mediterranean urban pattern in which public life remains central and shared.

Identity does not dissolve. Family traditions, religious practices, and cultural memory remain meaningful. What changes is how identity is carried. Rather than being asserted against others, it becomes layered – shaped simultaneously by heritage and shared space. Young people inherit the same informal rules as older generations. They learn which topics to approach carefully and which spaces invite openness. This awareness is not experienced as restriction, but as social fluency – an ability to navigate diversity without constant negotiation.

Living Together Without Declaration
Ulcinj does not present itself as a model, nor does it claim to resolve regional tensions. It simply reflects a form of everyday coexistence shaped by time, habit, and shared space. Multiculturalism here is not performed or celebrated; it is practised quietly. Difference remains visible, traditions remain distinct, and histories remain complex. Yet daily life continues without constant reference to division. Coexistence is not framed as tolerance, but as normality – sustained through routine, restraint, and mutual attention. In a region often described through conflict, Ulcinj offers a quieter narrative. One where cultures do not merge or confront, but live alongside each other, held together not by ideology, but by the simple continuity of everyday life.

A Layover in Abu Dhabi and the Question I Had Never Been asked Before: “Aren’t You Afraid?”

Soon I’ll be transferring in Abu Dhabi because of a long-haul flight – on paper, that’s all there is to it. Yet whenever I mention it, almost everyone asks the same (seemingly unusual) question: Am I afraid? A few years ago, this sentence didn’t exist in connection with the Emirates: Dubai and Abu Dhabi were, in our minds, the embodiment of sterile luxury and “everything works.” Now, the perception and the sense of proximity to conflict have shifted in a single turn. At the same time, as absurd as it may sound, the war in Ukraine is increasingly pushed into the background noise of everyday life in Central Europe, becoming almost insignificant to our sense of security.

Distances have shortened in our minds
Recently, while riding the tram in Budapest, I overheard the girls' complaining voices. High school students, 14-15 years old, were sobbing as they discussed that “there’s no way back, World War III is here.” At first, I thought the Ukraine- and Zelensky-themed posters placed during the final stretch of the election campaign had taken their toll – but I was quickly proven wrong. The girls’ strong emotions were triggered by the rockets that had fallen in Dubai.

On the map, the United Arab Emirates is far away, yet we feel it is close. Not only because of the news cycle, but also because, in our globalized lives, the Middle East is not “a region” but a hub: according to the WTTC (World Travel & Tourism Council), the region accounts for 5% of global international arrivals and 14% of international transit traffic. In other words, many people are not vacationing there – they are simply transferring in Dubai, Doha, or Abu Dhabi between Europe, Asia, and Africa. And what is close in network terms is also close psychologically: we tend to “short-circuit” risk even when the real danger is geographically farther away – as American psychology professor Paul Slovic argues.

“The safest place in the world” as a brand – and what happened to it almost overnight
The basic premise of Gulf tourism has been that here, you are buying stability. According to TIME, Gulf countries – including the United Arab Emirates – have consciously built a “carefully curated” image of themselves as havens of stability and prosperity in an often turbulent Middle East. This image was not sold only through buildings and event calendars, but also through influencers: Visit Dubai has been running organized influencer programs for years, explicitly designed to shape public “perception.”

Moreover, “safety” has become a measurable brand name. Gulf News, for example, citing the Numbeo Safety Index, described the UAE in 2025 as the world's safest country. From this perspective, it is understandable why it was shocking when, in the first days of the war, social media was flooded with footage of airports, hotels, and flames. According to TIME, these viral images made visible a fragility that had previously been hidden.

When airspace closes, tourism does not “slow down” – it stops
Tourism is an industry, but it lives in the air: if there is no route, there is no product. According to WTTC estimates, the escalation of the Iranian war is already wiping out at least $600 million per day in international tourist spending in the Middle East due to airspace chaos, loss of trust, and the disruption of regional connectivity. The same statement highlights that the Dubai-Abu Dhabi-Doha-Bahrain axis normally handles around 526,000 passengers daily.

From this perspective, Dubai is not “a city,” but infrastructure: according to Dubai Airports, DXB (Dubai International Airport) handled 95.2 million passengers in 2025, reaching a historic peak and record annual international traffic. After the outbreak of the war, Condé Nast Traveller reported mass cancellations, rerouted journeys, longer travel times, and technical fuel stops – while flights are only gradually resuming.

The collapse of bookings: trust costs more than kerosene
In tourism, statistics are essentially a measure of sentiment. Euronews, citing the Tourism Economics (Oxford Economics) model, writes that in 2026, the number of international visitors to the Middle East could fall by 11-27%; this would mean 23-38 million fewer travelers and a loss of $34-56 billion in spending, with the loss of trust potentially lingering even after the conflict.

This aligns with UN Tourism’s rapid assessment, which, under a multi-country airspace closure scenario, projects a 20-23% decline in regional arrivals in 2026 and roughly $35 billion in losses.

Free Malaysia Today, citing Reuters, reminds us that Middle Eastern tourism represents roughly $367 billion annually for the region, yet now risks precisely the “safe, high-end” image that has been built through billions of dollars in investment from Abu Dhabi to Dubai.

You shoot a video – and it’s not just the rocket that gets into the frame
In the battle of perception, the most ironic twist is that the protection of “safety” has now often become a matter of law enforcement. According to Sky News, a British human rights organization is aware of up to 70 British nationals being detained in the UAE after taking photos or videos of Iranian attacks. The online presence of the Emirates’ tourism agency on the controversial platform has always been significant. Self-proclaimed, muscular, almost exclusively male “nomad entrepreneur” lifestyle advisors have been repeating the same sentence for years: “the United Arab Emirates is the safest country in the world.” (The question naturally arises: for whom? On August 10, the iconic Day Zero returns, while the SZociety Movement is also launching, supporting professionals and communities working with young people’s mental health.

Since last October, the Sziget organizing office has been back in Hungarian ownership, and the team is building the 2026 festival along a rethought concept. According to Károly Gerendai, returning owner, the goal is for Sziget not to be just another major international festival, but once again a Budapest-based event that speaks to international audiences while also becoming a defining experience for Hungarian visitors. This includes a stronger integration of the local cultural and music scene, a closer relationship with the city, and a more pronounced focus on the festival’s unique identity.

One of the most visible elements of this shift is the return of Day Zero. On August 10, organizers are preparing a program that revisits some of Sziget’s most memorable moments: Faithless, Morcheeba, and Goran Bregović’s Wedding & Funeral Orchestra will take over the Main Stage. After the concerts, a modernized Táncdalfesztivál afterparty will continue the time-travel experience, hosted by Péter Janklovics and featuring special guests. The aim is clear: to bring together former Sziget-goers and new generations in a shared festival experience.

Beyond nostalgia, however, Sziget is also taking a stand on a highly relevant social issue. Launched under the SZiget SZociety Foundation, the SZociety Movement draws attention to the mental pressure, anxiety, and often invisible work of support professionals affecting the 16–25 age group. Rather than a one-off campaign, the initiative is designed as a year-round ecosystem, aiming to support, amplify, and strengthen those working in the field of mental health.

Closely tied to the movement is the SZuper SZociety Award, which will be presented on the Main Stage during the festival in multiple categories. The award highlights school psychologists, NGOs, digital creators, communities, and professionals who support young people in authentic and innovative ways. In a unique approach, alongside a professional jury, young people themselves will also play a key role in the decision-making process.

Sziget’s spatial structure continues to expand in 2026: the festival will be divided into eleven distinct districts, each functioning as its own self-contained world. Among them are the hip-hop and rap-focused dropYard, the electronic music-driven Delta District, the multidisciplinary Jardin des Arts, Wonderland, Impact Village, and the We Are Family zone designed for younger audiences and families.

The major music stages promise a strong lineup. The Main Stage will host names such as Skrillex, Florence + The Machine, Twenty One Pilots, Bring Me The Horizon, Lewis Capaldi, Skepta, Jorja Smith, Zara Larsson, and Tash Sultana. The Revolut Stage will feature acts including Soulwax, Nia Archives, Parcels, Ashnikko, Dijon, Underworld, and 2manydjs, while the electronic stages will welcome Peggy Gou, Sara Landry, Richie Hawtin, Dixon, Anfisa Letyago, and Joris Voorn.

A key new addition is the Budapest Park Stage by Johnnie Walker, where the Hungarian music scene takes center stage. Performers include Kispál és a Borz, Tankcsapda, Quimby, Bëlga, Péterfy Bori & Love Band, Irie Maffia, Majka, Beton.Hofi, Pogány Induló, Co Lee, Analog Balaton, Platon Karataev, and Manuel. With this, the organizers aim to reinforce Sziget as a festival that once again feels like a home ground event for the local audience.

Comfort and services are also evolving. Dust control will be handled in cooperation with Főkert using water from the Danube, more chill and rest zones will be introduced, and students will be able to purchase half-price passes under certain conditions. In gastronomy, the Budget-Friendly offering continues, the Food Market is introduced, and JótéKonyha—working together with the Hungarian Food Bank—brings food rescue into the festival environment.

All in all, Sziget 2026 arrives with a larger program and a more complex vision: one that builds on its own legacy, Budapest’s cultural energy, the local music scene, and social issues that extend far beyond the few days of the festival.

Nosztalgia, új lendület, mentális fókusz | Új korszakba lép a Sziget

2026-ban új fejezetet nyit a Sziget: a fesztivál egyszerre fordul vissza saját történetéhez és reagál a jelen egyik legsúlyosabb generációs problémájára. A szervezők augusztus 10-re a Sziget korábbi nagy pillanatait idéző programmal készülnek: a Nagyszínpadra érkezik a Faithless, a Morcheeba és Goran Bregović Wedding & Funeral Orchestrája. At the same time, in doing so, we lose sight of precisely those elements that would make the country’s internal logic comprehensible. In our conversation with Erzsébet N. Rózsa, we discussed why the simplified Western image of Iran is misleading, how civilizational memory, Shiite state ideology, and modern republican institutions coexist, and why such a society cannot be reprogrammed from the outside.

Why is it so difficult to understand Iranian society from the outside? Are there key fundamentals without which we misinterpret how the country functions?
Partly because for decades, we have spoken about Iran almost exclusively in negative terms. Most Europeans have no personal experience with the country, so the image quickly becomes simplified: fundamentalism, terror, Shiite theocracy, oppression. Yet the first important statement is that Iran is not merely a regime, but a nation-state with a strong historical consciousness. The Islamic Revolution did not create a caliphate, an imamate, or an emirate, but rather a republic – moreover, within a political culture in which modern institutions have more than a century of tradition. The Constitutional Revolution of 1905-1911 established a parliament and a constitutional monarchy, meaning these elements were not imported from outside Iran. From the outside, therefore, we see a dual system: the institutions of the republic formally function, while behind them stands a strong ideological supervisory system.

Iran’s historical self-image also reaches much deeper than we tend to assume, from Europe. One of its key texts is the Shahnameh, Ferdowsi’s great epic, which reached its final form by 1010 and has remained a foundational work of Persian historical consciousness. This also helps explain why, in the face of external threats, internal grievances often recede into the background: in such moments, for many, the existence of the country comes first, and only afterward does the question of their relationship to the system arise.

It is often said that Iran represents a civilization spanning several thousand years. At the same time, the current system emerged from a revolutionary foundation. How can it appropriate this past if it originally arose partly in opposition to it?
When the Shah’s system collapsed, it was driven by genuine, deep, society-wide dissatisfaction. At the beginning of the process, it was not at all predetermined that it would result in an Islamic Republic. The revolution initially did attempt to eliminate many old, pre-Islamic or popular traditions, but it soon became clear that these could not simply be erased. Even customs associated with the Iranian New Year and spring renewal could not be eliminated; instead, they gradually became integrated into the system's new symbolic order. The Iran-Iraq War also played a very important role in this, ultimately consolidating the post-revolutionary order.

This is why I usually teach Iran as having a three-layered identity: Iranian-ness, Islam, and the republic. Iranian-ness represents historical depth and civilizational self-image; Islam within this specifically refers to the Shiite tradition, while the republic represents modern political institutions. The Safavid era is particularly decisive in this respect: from 1501 onward, Twelver Shiism became the state religion of Iran, which, in the long term, fundamentally shaped the country’s political and identity structures.

How unified is Iranian society during wartime? From the outside, one often sees images of both street celebrations and mourning.
The image of people on one side celebrating while on the other mourning the leadership is, in my view, overly simplistic. Certainly, there were those who, in certain moments, reacted out of anger toward the regime. But when civilian casualties appear, when people see their own cities, families, schools, and hospitals in danger, a completely different logic comes into play. In such cases, the question is not how angry someone is at the regime, but rather that the war should end.

Dissatisfaction with the system does not disappear, but it is temporarily pushed into the background. In times of external attack, the logic of resistance becomes stronger: people primarily want their country not to be further destroyed, and they do not want to fear that in six months or a year, they will find themselves in the same situation again.

And what happens if a conflict drags on? Do social fault lines intensify?
As long as there is shooting, I think less so. During external attacks, society often temporarily suspends its internal disputes. The post-war period is another matter: there, what will be decisive is what political changes follow and what bargaining positions emerge. But it is important to see that, institutionally, the state does not necessarily collapse, even when many outside expect it to. This is often reflected in the composition of negotiating delegations: if competent actors from foreign policy, military, national security, economic, and technical fields are all present at the same time, it indicates that the state is still capable of structured thinking and preparing agreements.

Analyses of Iran often refer to concepts such as pragmatism, cunning, bargaining logic, or indirect communication. Are these accurate?
More or less yes – but only if we do not treat them as exotic characteristics. Pragmatism is very much observable: it is already a pragmatic approach when a state sits down to negotiate with competent actors from all relevant fields present. But it is also true of the system as a whole that the ultimate measure of every decision is its own survival and the preservation of its room for maneuver.

Cunning and the logic of bargaining are diplomacy itself. Diplomacy is not a diktat. It is not about someone showing up and declaring what will happen. Iranians find it difficult to accept ultimatums, but they can and want to negotiate – even if the outcome is not ideal for them. This is based on a very long accumulation of historical experience.

Indirect communication is not exclusively an Iranian phenomenon either. In Middle Eastern diplomacy and great-power politics alike, it is common for public statements and behind-the-scenes negotiations to differ. To understand how Iran operates, it is not enough to look only at what is said at a press conference; one must also observe the channels, intermediaries, and implicit messages operating in the background.

How does all this appear in the debate over the nuclear program?
Negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program did not begin yesterday. They have been ongoing for decades, and there was an agreement in which Iran committed to keeping the program within civilian limits under international supervision. The JCPOA set the upper limit of enrichment at 3.67 percent and imposed detailed technical restrictions; the turning point came when the United States withdrew from this agreement in 2018. The question, therefore, is not whether we believe what the Iranians say, but that there once existed a controlled framework that made this not a matter of belief, but of verification. From this perspective, a recurring element of the Iranian position is that the crisis of trust was deepened not only by Tehran but also by decisions in Washington.

Can external geopolitical pressure meaningfully steer Iran’s direction?
In my view, lasting political change cannot be forced from the outside. Ultimately, Iran’s internal transformation can only be determined by the Iranian society itself – if it wants it. External pressure can increase costs, and military or economic coercion can be applied, but that does not automatically make a society different. Bombing certainly cannot create a legitimate and stable internal transformation.

A külső támadás idején a társadalom sokszor átmenetileg felfüggeszti a belső vitáit.

| BIG SEE Festival 2026 Explores the Question of Measure">
The international platform rethinking the role of architecture and design returns to Slovenia this May to address one of the defining dilemmas of an age shaped by overproduction.

On May 21–22, 2026, Portorož will once again host the BIG SEE Festival, which has grown into one of the leading architecture and design events in Southeast Europe. Formed through the merger of the previously separate BIG Architecture and BIG Design, the festival now operates with an expanded focus: it examines architecture and design as tools that help navigate a world defined by complexity, responsibility, and constant change. The central question of this year’s edition may sound simple, yet it is difficult to answer: Too much? What is just enough?—how much is enough in an era where there seems to be an excess of everything.

The dilemma of abundance
More buildings, more objects, more visual stimuli, and an endless stream of opinions—architecture and design today operate within unprecedented freedom. The question is no longer what can be created, but what should be. The BIG SEE Festival approaches this dilemma as a conceptual framework that permeates every aspect of the event. According to the organizers, the role of architecture and design has always been to provide structure, orientation, and dignity. In an environment where everything is possible, choosing restraint becomes a professional and ethical decision.

Dialogue instead of presentation
One of the key elements of the festival is its conference, which deliberately moves away from trend-driven formats. The programme is structured around five perspectives—including the relevance of architecture, the human dimension of urban life, and the idea of radical reduction—and raises questions that cut to the core of the profession. Among the invited speakers are representatives of the Norman Foster Foundation, the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, and practices connected to MVRDV, alongside emerging studios. The aim is to create tension and genuine discourse, allowing participants to leave with sharper questions and a more conscious perspective.

Recognising work that focuses on substance
Since its launch in 2018, the BIG SEE Awards have evolved into an international platform acknowledging achievements in architecture and product design. The awards highlight projects that prioritise content, context, and clarity of intention over spectacle. The third pillar of the festival is the trade show, which consciously departs from the logic of large-scale commercial fairs. Selected exhibitors present materials, technologies, and products that can be applied in real architectural processes, from concept to execution.

Collective thinking on a global scale
As part of the 2026 theme, BIG SEE is launching an international survey exploring what “just enough” means today in architecture and design. The responses will not only feed into the festival programme but also contribute to a broader, collective reflection. Bringing together more than 3,000 visitors, 100 exhibitors, and over 800 programme elements, the event aims to do more than present the current state of the field—it seeks to offer direction. In a context where possibilities are endless, the real question is what we choose from them—and why.

For programmes and more information check the official site.

Beat a papíron | A Bomo Art Budapest új kollekciója

Bakelit-sercegés, magnószalag, félkész dalszövegek — a Bomo új, Hangstúdió kollekciója a zene születésének állapotát ragadja meg.

design

bomo art budapest

papír

csomagolás design

füzet

Hype&Hyper

Most először viszont kifejezetten a zene köré szervezett tárgyak is bekerültek a mixbe. The nostalgic atmosphere of Ifipark serves as a starting point, setting the visual rhythm for papers and objects alike.

There’s that moment when you drop the needle on a record and everything suddenly slows down. Bomo Art Budapest’s new Hangstúdió collection tries to capture exactly this — translating sound into paper, objects and surfaces. The reference point is Ifipark, though not in a dusty, archival sense. It’s closer to that dimly lit, slightly tense state before a concert or during a recording session: when nothing has happened yet, but everything is already in the air. The Hungarian beat culture of the 1960s and ’70s appears here without direct references — as a visual loop that feels both retro and distinctly contemporary. The story also comes full circle physically: the legendary Budai Ifjúsági Park once operated right above the Várkert Bazár, where Bomo’s shop stands today. Inspiration didn’t require going far — more like tuning back in.

From songwriting notebooks to record boxes
The collection’s graphics are the work of Éva Hollósi, and thankfully avoid the “retro filter on everything” trap. Instead, they build in layers: starting from sketches and gradually coming together, like a track in progress. The rendering of metallic surfaces and knobs is so detailed that up close they almost seem functional. Hangstúdió appears as a new pattern across existing Bomo products — journals, albums and planners all carry this visual rhythm. At the same time, objects specifically built around music enter the mix for the first time. One of these is the songwriting notebook, a space for unfinished lines, ideas and melodic fragments. No need to finish, no need to publish — it’s enough that it exists.

The record box operates on another level: practical, yet also a statement — your vinyls finally have a place that makes sense, instead of gathering dust on a random shelf. And of course, there are smaller, more wearable pieces like pins, signalling your taste in an old-school way. Bomo’s current direction clearly goes beyond objects, focusing instead on what we do with music once it’s no longer just background noise. The next step in this thinking is a collaborative publication with the Klasszik Lasszó team, bringing together literature, music and object culture in one boxed edition. The Hangstúdió collection ultimately works as a well-composed remix built from familiar elements.

Bomo Art Budapest: Instagram | web

At Nobu Hotel Warsaw, the encounter between Japanese minimalism and Art Deco character creates a compelling spatial experience.

The Nobu brand — founded by Robert De Niro, Nobu Matsuhisa and Meir Teper — is built globally on the integration of architecture, gastronomy and hospitality. The Warsaw hotel is a particularly strong, locally interpreted example of this approach, where interior design and architectural thinking are closely intertwined. One of the most intriguing aspects of the hotel is the relationship between old and new. The historic wing was developed from the former Hotel Rialto, while a contemporary new volume stands alongside it. Rather than separating, the two parts form a gentle tension — a dialogue that enriches the overall experience. This duality is also reflected in the interiors. The Japanese philosophy of omotenashi— a holistic, detail-oriented approach to hospitality — is evident not only in the level of service but also in the visual decisions, expressed through materials, light and proportions.

A Dialogue of Materials
The interior design of the 116 rooms is built on deliberate contrasts. Raw concrete surfaces are paired with warm wood and travertine, while textures and patterns maintain a careful balance within the composition. Contemporary elements — such as bold carpets or architectural concrete — enter into dialogue with Art Deco-inspired details: dark finishes, finely structured wood, and understated yet elegant wallpapers, all contributing to a rich atmosphere. The interiors feel both cool and welcoming, structured yet not rigid — defined instead by a quiet, subtle dynamism. The spatial experience is further enhanced by selected works from the ASOM Collection, featuring Polish artists whose presence adds a distinct local character to the interiors.

The new wing, designed by Medusa Group in collaboration with California-based Studio PCH, was developed on an irregular plot, requiring a highly precise design approach. The trapezoidal, glazed volume features staggered floors that create varied viewpoints while maximizing natural light. Its façade, composed of crushed glass, acts as a semi-transparent membrane, ensuring privacy while opening the interiors toward the city. The rounded glass corner introduces a more organic, fluid architectural language into the urban fabric — a subtle shift away from conventional high-end architectural forms.

A Local Response to a Global Language
At Nobu Hotel Warsaw, design is part of a larger narrative. This is reinforced by the hotel’s program: the Nobu restaurant with its Japanese-Peruvian cuisine, the Sake Bar, and the underground Jassmine jazz club, whose atmosphere recalls the intimate music venues of New York rather than a typical hotel setting. The sculptural staircase in the lobby, light-reflecting surfaces, and the darker, more enclosed ambiance of the club all carry forward the same idea — shaping spatial experience into something immersive.

Five years after its opening, Nobu Hotel Warsaw remains one of the most compelling examples of how a global brand can be reinterpreted within a local context. Architects Przemo Łukasik and Łukasz Zagała of Medusa Group have created a building that reflects Warsaw’s historical layers while engaging with an international design discourse. Perhaps this is why the project works so well: it does not attempt to reveal everything at once — instead, it allows the space to unfold slowly, layer by layer.

Kollektív képzelet egy asztal körül | Szkło Studio Tablescapes

A varsói Szkło Studio kézzel fújt üvegtárgyai az elmúlt években a nemzetközi designszcéna meghatározó platformjain jelentek meg a Nilufar Gallerytől a Vogue-ig.

design

lengyel design

Szkło Studio

üvegművészet

collectible design

Hype&Hyper

A varsói Szkło Studio kézzel fújt üvegtárgyai az elmúlt években a nemzetközi designszcéna meghatározó platformjain jelentek meg a Nilufar Gallerytől a Vogue-ig.
