The resurrection of an icon | Eames Turned Stool

The Hermann Miller team adds a new shape to the iconic Eames Stool range.

The Eames couple were among the most important designers of the 20th century, and the world is indebted to them for iconic pieces such as the Eames Chair and the House Bird, a black wooden bird. They also include the Eames Walnut Stool, a collection of three multifunctional chairs. The pieces, which are most reminiscent of chess pieces, can function as a sculpture, a chair, or a small table.

That year, the Herman Miller team also created a variation of the “D” chair based on the couple’s original designs, and the new shape was named the Eames Turned Stool. In addition to the new shape, the chairs will now be available in ebonized ash as well as walnut. Amy Auscherman, Director of Archives and Brand Heritage at MillerKnoll, said that the Eames office had originally planned to make a collection of ten pieces, but only three of these were sold.

The latest, the Eames Stool, is available for $1,295 from Herman Miller’s online store.
