Among other things, the international performers of the Love Revolution Special program will reflect on the environment, human rights, equality, and the importance of peace on the Sziget Main Stage this year. Every day, 10 minutes of presentations and short speeches will raise awareness of the social changes taking place around us and the collective responsibility that goes with them.
“The ‘Love Revolution’ is a great collective celebration, a happy and peaceful celebration of knowing that together we can achieve a world free from violence and fear, a livable Earth for our descendants, fundamental human rights everywhere, an end to prejudice and exclusion”, wrote the organizers of Sziget in the 2017 Love Revolution manifesto, which summarizes the values that Sziget has stood for since its inception. The spirit of the “Love Revolution” is reflected in many of the festival’s programs, including the Main Stage, where, in a changeover between two concerts, artists from around the world will raise awareness of the most pressing issues around us.
After conquering audiences in more than 20 countries, this year’s Love Revolution Special will bring the young Ukrainian acrobat Dima Malakhov to Sziget. His performance is entitled Make Art Not War – Together for Ukraine, as the young artist uses his raw energy and breathtaking tricks to raise awareness of the importance of peace and the importance of balance in all aspects of life, on land and in the air.
JJ Bola, Congolese-born, London-raised writer, poet, and Goodwill Ambassador of the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), will also be arriving on Sziget. His works have been translated into several languages and he campaigns to raise awareness of the situation and problems of refugees just like the political conflict in Congo. He is passionate about giving people the courage to change and improve their lives.
The internationally active Superar program inspires children in the program through the means of high artistic quality, collaborative music-making, especially for those who are disadvantaged and do not have access to similar opportunities. The joy of everyday creation, the empowering experience of working together and shared success is an irreplaceable experience that helps children and young people to overcome personal and social limitations, to develop their individuality, and to succeed in other areas of life. The Superar Children’s Choir has been supported by Sziget for many years and will perform on the Main Stage on 12 August.
The Body Carnival team from Japan is celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and its main message: the importance of accepting each other. Body Carnival is one of the world’s best-known break dance groups, winner of numerous world competitions. While being very active on the international breakdancing scene, they also play a key role in the development of new generations and local communities.
Joshua Beamish Dance Natural Tendencies is a performance that stands up against homophobia and proclaims that all love is equal. The Canadian contemporary ballet dancer and choreographer Joshua Beamish created the piece especially for Sziget to highlight the importance of tolerance and convey the message to visitors that people should not be judged by whom they love.
The final day of the Sziget will feature Tori Tsui, a Hong Kong-born climate activist and writer who explores the link between mental health and climate change, and Vanessa Nakate, a Ugandan climate activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador who founded the Rise Up Movement, a movement of young people across Africa who are the first young climate strikers in Uganda. Together, they are working to raise awareness of the steps we can take towards a more just and sustainable future.
