WWII bunker turned holiday home

WWII bunker turned holiday home

During World War II, Dorset was part of the last line of defense against Nazi invasion—the former radar station bunker has been revived as a holiday home while retaining its wartime aesthetic.

British firm Lipton Plant Architects led the radical redevelopment of the station, called the Trasmitter Bunker, to retain as many of its original features as possible. That means low ceilings, cracked and weathered walls, offset by new additions that make the space more habitable.

A new ‘bomb blast’ window carved into the solid concrete exterior overlooks the countryside, while the small terrace offers views of the beach. The interior is nestled into the hillside, while the station’s roof is completely grassed over. The accommodation features four beds, a kitchen, a bathroom and a wood stove.
