Sushi and cocktails in an array of lurid colors? Bompas & Parr design studio was up for the challenge!
Known as the “Architects of Taste”, the Bompas & Parr studio dreamed up the Glow-in-the-Dark Sushi bar as part of the Mother of the Nation festival. The event took place from 9 to 18 December 2021 in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
By combining ultraviolet light with bioluminescent ingredients, the designers created sushi dishes and cocktails in an array of lurid colors. The menu included fluorescent pink nigiri and maki in electric blue and neon green shades. This effect is achieved by using black light, a type of UV light that emits ultraviolet radiation. “It only works with specific foods or the vitamin B2. Examples include tonic water, bananas, peppers and honey,” Rian Coulter, Senior Manager at Bompas & Parr, told Dezeen. “The menu endeavors to bring the wider themes of entertainment and indulgence together in the best spirit of food, community and creativity,” said studio co-founder Harry Parr.
