The exhibition, opening on 3 March, will showcase the work of the most talented local designers competing for the Czech Grand Design Award.
The Czech Grand Design Award aims to highlight the country’s best designers and has long been considered Czechia’s most important creative competition. This year, eighty entries competed to win one of eight categories (product design, fashion, jewelry, graphic design, photography, illustration, manufacturer, and discovery of the year), with an absolute winner, Grand Designer of the Year, chosen across all categories.
Entrants are shortlisted by experts from the Czech Design Academy, who select the projects that made the biggest impact last year. An exhibition of the finalists’ work will open at the Česká Spořitelna Gallery in Prague’s Old Town on 3 March. This year’s entries were higher than average, which the organizers say shows that everyone is back in full force after the pandemic years, and the manufactories were eager to present a new collection to the public. The three finalists will be announced on 23 February at the Museum of Applied Arts in Brno, where the exhibition of last year’s winning design duo, Vrtiška & Žák, will also open. The 2022 winners will be presented on 21 March.
