Nowadays, we often feel that our world has become smaller, that we have less freedom and less space to be carefree. And those who long for these things often find themselves caught up in a seemingly better time in the past. The Instagram page acid__memories offers us the opportunity to escape a bit into the joyful world of the ’60s and ’70s. We invite you to join us once again in the latest episode of our DIVE series. Dive in!
In our bi-weekly DIVE series, we descend into the murky waters of Instagram and bring you some of the accounts worth following.
The site was created in 2018 by Violette, who had already been sharing similar content on her Tumblr page for years, which still exists under the name tomorrowcomesomedayblog, where she posts not only pictures but also music from the era, especially the ’70s, from folk to bossa nova.
There is no particular idea or story behind the project, says Violette, just a desire in many of us to share what we find, what we love, and to inspire others to do the same. For example, to scan their old books, as they can be real treasures.
Violette told us about herself and what makes her connected to this topic: “I was born and raised in Yugoslavia, but I’ve lived in France for ten years now, and I go to flea markets, brocantes, and thrift stores every single weekend. I almost always find interesting things, and that’s how it all started: old magazines and records.”
She says that the world we live in now can be quite unpleasant for her, which is why she likes to revisit old times, when she thinks the world was fun and eclectic, with much more variety than today. It is clearly this escapism that has made this project so important to her, and which has enabled her to create a world in which she can still enjoy the atmosphere of the era she loves so much. This is what she brings to others.
“I like photos of people doing handcrafted things, folk art-related stuff, or picking vegetables and fruits. Wildlife, beautiful landscapes, other cultures... they’re all topics I am interested in,” she said when asked about the inspiration behind her choice of images. We also asked her to choose three pictures that were particularly close to her heart, which are:
Violette recommends the site especially for younger generations to see what the world was like before smartphones and the internet: more spontaneous and free. However, older people can also enjoy it, as they sometimes visit it to share their childhood memories evoked by a picture.
In two weeks, we’ll be back with the background story of another Instagram page, but in the meantime, dive into the previous part of our DIVE series, where you can get a taste of the former Yugoslavian lifestyle, courtesy of Made in Yugoslavia.
