IKEA and social enterprise Little Sun have teamed up to explore how solar powering everyday objects can become a talking point through design. This is how SAMMANLÄNKAD was born, consisting of two solar-powered LED lamps.
The collaboration between IKEA and Little Sun, a social enterprise founded by world-renowned artist Olafur Eliasson and engineer Frederik Ottesen, has resulted in stylish, practical, and classy objects that make the sun’s energy tangible. “To make the transition to renewable energy in the next decade, it is important to recognize the potential of solar energy. Sunlight is invisible, but we can make it visible with solar energy,” said Olafur Eliasson, artist, and co-founder of Little Sun.
SAMMANLÄNKAD combines beauty, art, and design with the advantages of solar energy. The design of the solar-powered LED table lamp is inspired by the position of the Sun and the Earth and the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. The effect of the hemispherical light source is enhanced by a mirror that evokes sunlight. The aim of SAMMANLÄNKAD is to let people experience the benefits of solar energy in their homes while raising awareness of the availability of alternative power sources to operate everyday objects.
“Design, beauty, and simplicity—this is what makes SAMMANLÄNKAD products irresistible and make our solar-powered future tangible,” added Felix Hallwachs, Managing Director of Little Sun.
The solar-powered light sources will be available in IKEA stores from April 2023.
