Lookout points guarding the Czech mountains

Lookout points guarding the Czech mountains

The ridge of the Stráž mountain—where guard posts used to be located, and warning fires lit if enemy approached—towers over the Czech town of Rokytnice. Although such dangers and with it the use of warning beacons are a thing of the past, new, symbolic guards have been appointed for Rokytnice nad Jizerou (Rokytnice over the Jizera river—the Transl.). Thanks to the team of Mjölk architeckti, four lookout points stand guard over the town, symbolizing the four villages that combined to form the town of Rokytnice in ancient times. They are the Fox, the Bear, the Sheep, and the Miner—together they form the The Guard Patrol.

The Guard Patrol project was started in 2014 on the local government’s initiative. Although the original plans set forth the building of a traditional lookout tower on the peek of the Stráž mountain, the morphology of the ridge did not allow this. To provide the visitors with the best panorama, the Mjölk team has chosen four horns surrounding the mountain top for the lookout points’ locations. The design of the resulting four wood-cladded light steel structures was inspired by the figures in the town’s coat of arms.
