Our new favorites: the Polish expeditionists

Who became the king of Madagascar and who discovered the source of the Amazon? How to cross Africa by bike and how to stand on both poles of the Earth in one year? Can you go around the world in a car and cross the Atlantic… in a kayak? These are not just questions out of thin air, but real-life cases, and the answers are in this book.

Fairies, kings, third-born poverty boys—they’re not the only characters dominating children’s books these days, but real-life heroes are also getting more and more attention. I wouldn’t say they’re ordinary, as sailing across an ocean is no everyday occurrence. After the world-famous children’s book collection Little People, BIG DREAMS, which tells the stories of Coco Chanel, Jane Goodall, and Mother Teresa, we finally have a regional perspective: Great Expeditions.Polish Adventurers Across the Globe (Podróżnicy. Wielkie Wyprawy Polaków) tells the stories of seventeen brave Poles from the Middle Ages to the modern age.

The stories in the book were written by Andrzej Fedorowicz and designed and illustrated by Zosia Frankowska and Jacek Ambrożewski. The Polish edition was published in 2019 by Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry, and in the same year, it won the ‘Book of the Year’ prize organized by IBBY.

The amazing expeditionists feature exiles, pirates, scientists, athletes, and even journalists who have changed not just Poland but the world with their audacity. See them for yourself!
