Oppenheim Architecture won the design contract for the Besa Museum, which will symbolize the hospitality of Albania.
The competition was for the renovation and modernization of a historic building in the Albanian capital, and the creation of a contemporary cultural center in harmony with the historic architectural environment. The project also includes the creation of a museum focusing on the Albanian value of the Besa, a building that once played a role in protecting Jews from persecution.
The name Besa Museum derives from the Albanian term besa, which embodies the principle of offering warm hospitality and protection to all guests. In addition to the exhibition spaces, the building will include an entrance hall, a reading room, a shop, a café, offices, and storage rooms.
The most striking features of the museum will be the bright red monoliths in the courtyard, which will serve as a focal point and attract visitors from all parts of the city. It will be a minimalist yet effective way of marking the museum’s presence in the historic cityscape of Tirana.
