Two new towers expand Vienna’s skyline

A green and a glass building will soon tower over Vienna’s Prater, and the plans have just been unveiled.

Designed by the same architectural firm, the two towers, which will be built in Vienna’s rapidly developing second district, will be very different in appearance and function. Marco Cucinella Architects won an invitation-only competition and the two buildings will be erected side by side on a site overlooking Vienna’s iconic Prater.

Grünblick is intended to be a vertical extension of the surrounding landscape, both visually and physically, so the 90-meter-high structure is mainly defined by a rhythmic alternation of terraces, with plenty of greenery. The mainly residential complex is designed to allow plenty of natural light into the homes while protecting residents from the high summer temperatures.

The tallest tower, the 120-meter Weitblick, will be home to offices. Its elliptical shape is designed to control high turbulences around tower buildings, and its glass envelope is broken by vertical shading that rises up high.
