V&A’s newly opened gallery retells history with the help of design classics

A permanent design gallery called ‘Design: 1900—Now’ has opened at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. This thematic exhibition, the first of its kind, presents the most significant social movements of the 20th and 21st centuries with the help of the epoch-making and history-shaping classics of our object culture.

The exhibition, listing two hundred and fifty pieces, is divided into six themes: Automation and Labour covering the Early 20th Century up to the 1930s; Housing and Living looking at household innovations between 1920 and 1940; and Crisis and Conflict focusing on the period from 1935 to 1955. Across the hall, the Consumption and Identity section covers the period from 1955 to 1975, while Sustainability and Subversion explores the period from the 1960s to the 2000s. Finally, the most recent, Data and Consumption section focuses on technological innovations over the past two decades.

Büfé #6—Syrups, soft drinks

On a sultry-hot summer day, nothing quenches the thirst quite as well as an ice-cold drink. Yet on those days when squeezing lemons for a lemonade seems like a drag and even the thought of a beer makes us dizzy, it is time for the golden oldies. They are sweet,
