What a view! Matisse’s former seaside apartment for sale

The legendary painter’s Nice apartment with a stunning panoramic view, where he lived and worked for ten years, is now available for sale.

This is the seaside home where Henri Matisse spent his days after 1938. The painter, who became famous as a leading figure in Fauvism, had a very productive period during this decade, perhaps helped by this palatial apartment with its stunning views. Located in the Cimiez neighborhood of Nice, on the top floor of an iconic building, the Régina, the property is now looking for a new owner for $2.69 million. The apartment has a perfect view of the French Riviera, and of course, features magnificent details such as high ceilings, a carved fireplace, and ornate windows. Once a hotel, the Régina now offers luxury apartments with tennis courts and a swimming pool.

“Most come here for the light and the picturesque beauty (or scenery),” Matisse wrote of the Côte d’Azur in 1952. “I am from the North. The large colorful reflections in January, the brightness of the day are what attracted me to settle here.” He arrived in the Cimiez neighborhood as early as 1917, where he rented rooms for himself in varying locations at first. In his last years before his death in 1954, he was confined to a wheelchair following a stomach operation. It was here, in this apartment, that he discovered the gouache technique, which he used in his last works.
