Environmentally friendly public spaces and transport infrastructure are mixed in the winning design by Zaha Hadid Architects.
As part of the Rail Baltica program, Zaha Hadid Architects designed a train station in a new Baltic country, after Tallinn. One of its most exciting features is a new bridge with cycle lanes over the railway tracks, linking the Naujininkai district to the city center. The bridge will be built on top of the old neoclassical-style station, and will renew its roof structure with a contemporary design language, elongated geometric elements and curved design. According to the plans, the bridge will be 46 meters wide and will stretch 150 meters above the railway platforms. The roof structure and the bus stops will be made of lightweight and fire-resistant local materials. The planned green roof will provide cooling in summer and insulation in winter.
