His fans might not have been aware of the sculptor ambitions of the actor/legend, but Brad Pitt’s works immediately made it to a museum. In the Art Museum in Tampere, Finland, Pitt exhibits with Nick Cave among others.
The latest exhibition of the Sara Hildén Art Museum in Tampere caused a decent amount of commotion in the art world, as the exhibiting artists also featured Brad Pitt, which came as a surprise to locals, as well. The WE exhibition, open until 15 January, is a large-scale project by renowned British artist Thomas Houseago.
As Brad Pitt revealed, he’s a “largely self-taught” sculptor. The actor reportedly began trying his hand at pottery after his divorce from Angelina Jolie, spending much time in Houseago’s Los Angeles studio. He even invited Leonardo DiCaprio over to his studio during the making of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He shared at the opening that to him, “[creating] is about self-reflection. It’s about where I have gotten it wrong in my relationships, where have I misstepped, where am I complicit.” Nine of his works were presented in Tampere, one the most influential pieces being Aiming At You I Saw Me But It Was Too Late This Time, depicting a gunfight between eight figures including hands and feet attempting to break through the plaster structure. His first sculpture named House A Go Go, made out of tree bark and held together with tape, was also exhibited, but the house motif recurs in the silicone building sculptures, as well, shot through with different calibers of bullets.
In Contrast with Pitt, Nick Cave is a trained artist: he studied painting at the Caulfield Institute of Technology before pursuing music, although this is his introduction as a ceramist. He created 17 handpainted ceramic figurines depicting “the life of the Devil in 17 stations.”
