Buro Happold and WXCA have worked together on the Polish Army Museum, which links the history of the whole country with the contemporary urban context.
The museum covers 32 hectares of the Warsaw Citadel, which is a hilltop fortress. Together with several others, such as the KatyńMuseum and the soon-to-be-built Museum of Polish History, it will form one of the largest museum complexes in Europe.
As well as displaying a collection of Polish weapons, the building will also host temporary exhibitions and events. The façade is defined by a bespoke formwork pattern of chevrons that refers to military decoration, reflecting the site’s two centuries of history and its ongoing relationship with the military. This pattern is repeated on the walls of the galleries and other interior spaces.
Buro Happold, the creative and engineering firm behind the project, has also designed a new entrance tunnel, which allows access from the banks of the Vistula River and through the embankment at the foot of the Citadel.
