The plans for a skyscraper in Ostrava did not impress the city council, so the competition was reopened to architectural firms.
The construction of the Ostrava skyscraper, billed as the tallest building in Czechia, was due to start in 2022, but after a series of changes, the original plans submitted by Chybik + Kristof were rejected in their entirety. The decision is the result of a conflict between the developer, RT Torax, and the city council, who claim that the developers did not take sufficient account of the city’s interests and kept changing the pre-approved plans, which would have had a negative impact on the daily life of the surrounding areas. They have therefore decided to reopen the competition and look for new solutions, this time not only for the building itself but also for its connections to public spaces. The winning design will be announced by June 2024, after which the lengthy permitting process and construction could begin, so that the building could be opened in 2032 at best, instead of 2027 as originally planned.
