Independent Ukrainian radio station Gasoline has released a documentary entitled Spadok (Heritage) on the music and traditions of the Hutsul region and an album of contemporary artists using Hutsul melodies.
Gasoline Radio was launched a year ago during the full-scale invasion of the Ukraine-Russia war by the team of enthusiasts who were connected to a couple of cultural projects such as Katacult Magazine, Kultura Zvuku club, label and music school. The project focuses on Ukrainian culture, with thematic programs and music selections showcasing different aspects of Ukrainian music. The radio team conducted an ethnographic expedition to the Carpathians to study the folklore of the Hutsul region, leading to the film Spadok (Heritage). The Hutsuls are an ethnic group that living in the western part of Ukraine, in what is now Transcarpathia.
In addition to the documentary, an album was produced in which contemporary musicians used the sounds of Hutsul music. The team said that this way they managed to create a dialogue between the younger generation of artists and those who play traditional Ukrainian music.
