During a raid in Sofia, Bulgarian police discovered a previously unknown painting whose author could be Jackson Pollock.
The artwork dates from 1949 and could be worth up to €50 million. On the back of the canvas is a handwritten dedication to the American actress—and art collector—Lauren Bacall: “Dedicated to my very talented and dear friend Lauren Bacall, Happy Birthday,” reads the message, presumably written by Pollock himself. The text is dated 16 September 1949, Bacall’s 25th birthday.
The alleged Pollock painting has since been moved to the National Art Gallery in Bulgaria. The artwork was one of six seized in a joint investigation by the Bulgarian and Greek authorities into an organized crime group.
