Sean Penn’s documentary on Ukraine to premiere at Berlinale

The movie Superpower will premiere out-of-competition in February at the Berlin Film Festival.

After the outbreak of war, the world was filled with commentary from Sean Penn, who was in Ukraine making a film about President Zelenskyy when the war broke out. So the planned documentary turned into something very different and dark: Superpower, co-directed with Aaron Kaufman, will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February. During the filming, Zelensky and Penn developed a close relationship, Penn even left one of his Academy Awards in Kyiv on the condition that if they won the war, Zelensky would visit him in Malibu and return the statuette. Since then, the actor-director has regularly spoken out in support of the Ukrainians, most recently at the Golden Globes.

The film debuts on the anniversary of the outbreak of the war, which the festival will commemorate by using blue and yellow as the official color of this year’s event, offering free entry to Ukrainian filmmakers and hosting a panel discussion on how to help fund projects by Ukrainian filmmakers.
