The magic of Poznań staircases

Poznań guide Zbigniew Zachariasik’s recently published book, The Staircases of Poznań, showcases some of the most beautiful staircases in the Polish city, and their magical details.

Zachariasik first used a smartphone to take pictures of various buildings in Poznań, and then, during his urban explorations, he ventured into Matejki Street and finally into a stairwell. Although he was initially embarrassed to enter someone’s home, he was also fascinated by what he saw.

Over the years, his love of stairs grew to such an extent that his friends started to show him some remarkable ones, and he started to follow relevant websites. He took photos of the staircases, capturing the details, the stained glass windows, the banisters. He eventually created a dedicated page for them, which was a great success. “I used to wonder how it was that so few people paid attention to these staircases, because they hold so much charm, beauty, and history,” he said.

This motivated him so much that he eventually started visiting other towns, such as Lower Silesia and Szczecin, but he believes that you can find tiles from 120 years ago or cast iron railings with unique decorations anywhere. In Poznań, he recommends a particular staircase, at 38 Jackowskiego, which is “one of the most colorful in the city, decorated with flowers found only in Poland”. There is also one at 10 Wyspiańskiego Street, “adorned with a huge stained glass window and an internal balcony”, and one at 8 Cyryl Ratajski Square.

According to him, we have reached a point where architecture is appreciated and more and more people are paying attention to its preservation, and fortunately it has become important to protect what is old and restore what has been damaged as much as possible—this is one way of promoting cities.
