Located on top of a valley in Puerto Natales, Chile, these six chalets are now operating as a hotel under the name AKA Patagonia. The silhouette of the complex reflects the rocky mountains and volcanoes in the distance. Architect Pablo Larroulet describes the cabin hotel as “an architecture that emerges from the earth and becomes part of nature”.
Larroulet has designed the cabins to offer panoramic views of the southern Patagonian landscape, situating them to capture as much natural daylight as possible. A bank of floor-to-ceiling windows looks over the valley plain and the mountain gorge beyond.
In order to protect the surrounding landscape, the individual chalets were built from prefabricated modules on piles. Their exteriors are covered with native flax wood, which is resistant to different weather conditions and will gradually acquire a beautiful patina over time. The wood paneling continues into the cabins’ interior, where only the most essential and practical furniture has been placed. A separate communal area is used for cooking and dining.
