The new opening date for the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum in Abu Dhabi has been announced: construction is expected to end in 2026. The announcement was made by Guggenheim’s director Richard Armstrong at a press conference in Basel.
The decision to create the building was first taken in 2006 and it was scheduled to open in 2012. A new opening date was later set for 2017—which apparently did not materialize. The project has been through many ups-and-downs with construction suspended several times due to international protests.
The Guggenheim Museum in Abu Dhabi is planned to be built in the same museum district on Sadijat Island where the Jean Nouvel-designed Louvre is located. These two will be joined by the Zayed National Museum designed by Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid’s Performing Arts Center and Tadao Ando’s Maritime Museum.
The museum is planned to feature the largest exhibition space compared to the Guggenheim Museums in Bilbao and New York, as well as an education center and a theatre with seating for 350 people. The building is described by Frank Gehry as “intentionally ‘messy’, moving into clarity”.
