What fabric will our clothes be made of in 20 years? How could the design sector improve its use of material for a more sustainable economy? This and many other topics will be discussed at the Future Materials conference hosted by Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest.
In our lifetime, we come across an enormous number of materials through our clothing, packaged food, furniture and household items. They are constantly accumulating, decomposing easily or even after long centuries. In the face of climate change, it’s very important to pay attention to the choice of the materials that surround us and to their afterlife.
The Innovation Center of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, one of the leading design research and innovation hubs of the Central and Eastern European region, answers this global challenge. The first Future Materials conference will be held at MOME on 15 and 16 September, which is the first event to discuss the topic of material research and development. Besides researchers and students, representatives of the private sector are also welcome, so that they get to know new trends of the material industry via discussions and workshops. The aim of the event is to push the boundaries of material design culture by mixing the knowledge of people from different fields.
The conference will focus on intelligent, active and other high-tech materials and wearable technologies besides organic, renewable and recycled material types, new approaches and the material as an important platform for culture and storytelling. The event will feature numerous renowned foreign speakers such as researcher Rebecca Earley, Professor of Centre for Circular Design at the University of the Arts London, Dr. Andrew Dent, EVP of Materials Research at Material ConneXion New York, or Barbara Kotoun, Sustainability Manager of IKEA.
