The Kyiv beauty center offers relaxation for both body and mind.
While life has certainly not stopped in Kyiv, since the outbreak of the war, self-care has unfortunately been at the bottom of the priority list for locals. That’s why the owners of Jolly Beauty Salon are waiting for the moment when their shop, completed in 2022, can finally open safely and pamper tired and frazzled Kyivites after the long hardships. The salon aspires to function as a calming oasis in the bustle of the big city. The interior design duo Rina Lovko and Daryna Shpuryk have sought to visually reinforce this by using natural materials, raw textures, and subtle colors. The overall effect evokes the feeling of being on a sandy beach. Although the style of the interior is minimalistic, vintage furniture and wood paneling have been used to make it more welcoming.
The salon is housed in a 1950s building in the center of Kyiv’s business district. The walls of the building have been cleaned and unnecessary signage removed so that the Jolly’s style can be seen from the outside. The renovation of the premises took around six months, during which the multi-functional interior was designed to ensure that every step of the beautification process has its own dedicated and practical space, where neither customers nor employees are disturbed. As the space is not too big (77 square meters), bespoke furniture is used in even the smallest corners.
The focal point of the room is the travertine stone cladding of the main wall, which has been hand-colored in a soothing pinkish hue. The stone is not only used for aesthetic reasons: it effectively protects the wall and makes it easy to clean. The reception desk is also clad in stone, but here the choice fell on quartz. The waiting room has original vintage Knoll chairs, with hard textures softened by oak veneered shelving and furniture. An additional eye-catching detail is the illuminated ceiling, which runs up to a mirror occupying a large part of one of the walls, multiplying the light that enters the room and creating a pleasantly bright but non-intrusive atmosphere, as well as enhancing the sense of spaciousness.
