NASA is testing an electric airplane

The aircraft named X-57 Maxwell is now ready for its first tests after years of development.

The development process of the experimental aircraft has entered the phase of high-voltage functional ground testing: they are working on improving the prototype in the Californian Armstrong Flights Research Center. NASA’s goal with the plane is nothing less than creating a fully carbon-neutral alternative in air travel.

The plane uses 12 high-lift propellers for take-off and landing, these blades fold back when not in use to avoid additional aerodynamic drag. The plane has already passed a successful wind tunnel test, so it’s getting closer and closer to being able to take off.
