Pediatric clinic reimagined—Mana Design creates a harmonious interior for the Nord Clinic in Poland

These days, consciously constructed, tasteful interior design concepts are not only found in dedicated magazines, as the trend for sophisticated homes is slowly filtering into public institutions. Thanks to Mana Design, visitors to the Nord Clinic in Gdańsk, Poland can feel at home in a peaceful, child-friendly clinic instead of Mickey Mouse figures glued to the tiles.

Leaving extremely colorful accessories and stereotypes behind, Marta Napiórkowska from Mana Design has focused on harmony as the key pillar of the concept. The Nord Clinic is a modern pediatric center where, in addition to general practitioners, specialists offer everything from diagnostics, physiotherapy, and speech therapy to psychological care. The clinic comprises consultation rooms, therapy rooms, and treatment rooms, while the playful, sophisticated environment and interior design help ensure quality treatment for young patients.

The main design goal was to create a highly comfortable and functional space for children and doctors. The specifically ergonomic and intuitive interior space is adapted to the medical aids and ensures the right conditions for the staff.

The green color, not unfamiliar in hospitals but unusually dominant here, is no coincidence: creating a sense of harmony and peace, it helps evoke a sense of comfort. In addition to the interplay of pale green shades, there are intense details in the red, yellow, and blue accessories.

Most of the lamps are products of Mana Design, but there are also a few vintage pieces, such as the Mazzegga lamp designed by Carlo Nason or the classic Bauhaus Kaiser Idell table lamp.

The function of the space had a major influence on the use of materials in the interior, as they had to meet medical requirements as much as possible. Inclusivity is also an essential factor—whether it’s a stroller or a medical aid, freedom of movement must be ensured. The wall slats are therefore not only decorative but also a stylish tool. The central feature of the waiting room is an upholstered hornbeam veneer island, which is also reflected in the doors. Here, too, practicality has played a major role in the use of materials, as the aforementioned element has an extremely high resistance.

Somewhat reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s world, the clinic is groundbreaking in rethinking public buildings designed for children, where function and appearance go hand in hand.
