Singaporean social housing tables from above

The series by photographer Jonathan Tan focuses on the tables of social housing buildings, built in Singapore during the sixties. With photos composed of shapes and forms shot from above, the series is entitled Lepak downstairs, meaning Relax downstairs.

The photos, shot with an iPhone XR and a selfie-stick, depict the old, distinctive tables and chairs on the first floor of social housing buildings in Singapore. These spaces were designed to encourage residents to socialize with each other. The pieces of communal furniture took on a sculpture-like shape and were decorated with colorful mosaics. Jonathan Tan has always found these iconic furniture items intriguing, which are now, unfortunately, often replaced by modern tables.
