The M+ museum in Hong Kong opens soon

The Herzog & de Meuron-designed ‘M+’ museum in Hong Kong is soon to open its gates to the public. The project is Asia’s first global contemporary museum.

The M+ museum is located in the Kowloon Cultural District and the official opening will take place on 12 November 2021. The museum will unveil the opening displays of its collections of visual art, design and architecture, and moving image from Hong Kong, China, Asia, and beyond. Close to 1,500 works of art will be on display in an exhibition space of around 17,000 square meters.

Designed by the architect firm Herzog & de Meuron in partnership with TFP Farrells and Arup, the 65,000-square-meter museum has a monumental effect. Situated on the waterfront of Victoria Harbour, the building got a striking terracotta tiling, with a dynamic LED system on the south façade displaying M+’s program, in line with the city’s vibrant night-time environment. Visitors can also enjoy the convenience of two museum shops, restaurants, and a roof garden.
