The monumental halls of a monastery are brought back to life as a hotel

In Arco, Italy, the monumental halls of a seventeenth–century monastery are brought to new life, transformed into a unique hotel by the noa* architecture studio, while preserving the original character and meditative atmosphere of the building. Welcome to the Monastero Arx Vivendi!

As part of the restoration project of the Serve di Maria Addolorata Monastery in the center of Arco, at the northern tip of Lake Garda, noa*’s mission was to recreate the majestic power and spiritual dimension once represented by the monastery and to restore its most characteristic elements. The estate is surrounded by an extensive garden with a stone wall, and half of the building still houses a temple and monastery.

The project involved two main phases: the renovation and the transformation of the first monastery and its interior into a hotel, which included the creation of common spaces on the ground floor, such as the reception, lobby, buffet, bar and kitchen, as well as the rooms. A new spa, inspired by typical rural buildings, was also built in the monastery gardens. The new wellness area now includes a relaxation room of 500 square meters, treatment rooms, saunas and a Turkish bath.

“We were guided by a design philosophy that has helped us to preserve the compositional, static and visual purity that makes a monastery a truly special place,” the architects said.
