Once upon a time, there was a castle. According to the legend, the castle was so big that it had as many rooms as there were days in a year.
One of the largest castles in Slovenia is located in Grad in the northeastern part of the country. The building was revived in 2019 by the professionals’ designs of ARREA architecture studio.
In the absence of very crucial financial resources, the entire reconstruction was an unattainable goal: with the project, the architects wanted to keep the patinated building alive rather than completely renovate it.
The castle’s innumerable different spaces function as a collage: they document the stages of aging and present the aims of the renovation, like a time capsule that reveals the impact of the past years on architecture to us.
The main goal is to stabilize the original structure with the current works and allow the rooms to be filled with new functions.
The materials used: sandstone, oak and snow-whitewashed walls create living spaces and complement the elements preserved in their original condition.
