Bjarke Ingels and his team also ventured on the field of designing off-coast island-cities. They designed three islands off the shore of Penang Island, Malaysia, in the spirit of sustainability and environmentalism as part of the Penang2030 project.
The new group of islands titled BiodiverCity would reach across 1821 hectares near the shores of the state of Penang, Malaysia according to the designs of architecture studio BIG. They designed open beaches, parks as well as houses built of bamboo and green concrete on every member of the floating island cluster. The floating islands could give home to approx. 15-18,000 habitants, who would be supplied by local water resources and renewable energy sources.
In addition to environment protection – as the project, as also suggested by its name, would place a great emphasis on preserving local biodiversity –, future technologies would also get a central role on the island. Central in the literal sense of the word, as the designers envisioned a 200 hectare digital park in the center of the city, allowing visitors to learn about the innovations of technology, robotics and virtual reality.
